Chairman Mao
by Outaservice inin the 60's and early 70's china was experiencing a 'cultural revolution' around the teachings of it's chairman mao zedong.
a photojournalist, li zhensheng according to the may issue of smithsonian magazine took many pictures of the events surrounding this event.. in the article entitled "dancing for mao' was a picture of a 5-year old girl named kang wenjie who was performing a so-called 'loyalty dance' on the last day of a 23-day gathering of a mao 'teach-in'.. along with the dance she was singing: 'no matter how close our parents are to us, they are not as close as our relationship with mao...' how absurb, thought li, who thought to himself that this worship was to the excess and the zeal very discomforting.
in the cult of mao, everyone was expected to perform the 'loyalty dance'!.

First post after lurking on the sidelines
by onefootout ini've been lurking on the sidelines for a while and have decided to jump in and introduce myself.
the name kinda gives it away.
i'm a lifer who got a shocker about a year ago by stumbling across the 607 baloney.

Mrs. Fiorini
Welcome to the board! I knew what you meant when you said lifer.
As far as monitoring goes, I assume the WT does it. It is in their interest to know what the "opposition" is doing and saying about them. There have been stories that have indicated some were outed because of revealing information that was used to identify them. I would be careful about revealing details that could identify either you or your congregation if you are still attending meetings as an active JW, or would be in danger of being DFd somehow.
In the mean time, enjoy your experience here. This site has been great for me. I hope it will be for you too.

Steven Hassan's Cult book...
by homeschool inok, so i'm over halfway through with this book on combatting cult mind control.
does the dude ever mention jw's (besides one page in the bibliography at the end)?
if not, would there be a way to get a jw to read the book, maybe pointing fingers at some other cult religion so you dont appear to be talking about the witnesses?
-
Mrs. Fiorini
I, too, have been tremendously helped by Hassan's books.
It's so sad when JWs are afraid to read books on cults and how they operate. Anyone who feels this way owes it to themselves to find out why.

Thanks for sharing the video. It brought a smile to my face.
I have not noticed before the scripture in Acts 7:59 where Stephen prayed to Jesus. How does the WT explain this?
Isn't it amazing that, as a JW we could read scriptures and just not see what they said?

Is it possible that the WT society will soon collapse like a house of cards?
by BonaFide inthe recent internet phenomenon seems to be that 1. some news story breaks, and then 2. people start talking about it and twittering and forwarding emails about it.
and then it multiplies and multiplies until finally, 3. the whole world is talking about it.
the same with the madoff scheme.

I think chances are good the WT will be around for a long time. The question is, in what form? It is facing attack on several fronts right now. More likely will follow. Over time that will change the nature of the organization and how it operates.
Many factors play into the situation, including the internet, ex-members and their activities, governments taking action against abuses they see, economic factors, and changes in the publishing business, to name a few. Just like Rome didn't fall in a day or for a single reason, the WT won't either. IMO they are too big, too wealthy, and have been aroung too long to disappear any time soon.
That doesn't bother me though. In fact it may be for the best because many followers won't be in a position to cope successfully with the demise of the WT, and those people have been hurt too much by them already anyway. I don't want to see a bunch of suicides of people who can't face the truth about "the truth".
The WT's existence is not a problem for me. The damage they do to their followers and the greater world community is. That is what needs to change as far as I'm concerned. Over time, that can and hopefully will happen.

Jerusalem destroyed 607 or 586/7?
by isaacaustin inlet's try this again...most of us are aware that all available evidence points to the time of jerusalem's destruction at the 586/7bc time frame.
overwhelming evidence includes astronomical phenomena, achaeological evidence, bank records, the bible itself.. some hold to 607bc, for obvious reasons- the implications it has.
thoughts on how this would effect the average witness if forced to conclude 607 is wrong?
-
Mrs. Fiorini
Most JWs believe what they do because the WT uses manipulation and mind control techniques on them. The WT could tell them that the moon was made of green cheese and they would believe it. Anyone remember the CO who used to hold up his black bible at CAs and say, "if the FDS told me this bible was white, I'd say it was white"?
I think if confronted with proof the society was wrong many would say, "The brothers know more than we do about this. Even though it looks to me like they are wrong, they have people studying this back in Brooklyn who have it all figured out and would be able to explain why they are right."

Swine Flu world epedemic Lies! Remember Sars and Birdflu nothing happened!
by Witness 007 inwhat's with the damn media panic?
swine flu is gonna wipe out the world!.....like the witnesses i'm tired of these lies, sars and bird flu were not that huge....a year ago a scientist said birdflu would be the next "spanish influenza" killing millions......hello, i'm still here wearing a gas mask!.
lets all panic the friggin world so they forget the economy!!!!!!

From what I understand, it's too soon to tell if this will be a major pandemic or not. It's not too soon to know that the WT will exploit it for everything it's worth. Prepare to hear about how it's "proof" that now Armageddon is closer than ever!

Who's Really To Blame?
by AllTimeJeff ini hope all reading this will consider the following a commentary.
i have no one in mind, but a few posts have got me thinking about my own jw experience.
also, reading of the bad experiences and pain of others here gives me much room to pause.. clearly, most of us, with good reason, hate jehovah's witnesses (the religion, and sometimes, the people).

I try to separate the people from the organization. I think everyone associated with the WT is a victim of it. Even the current members of the GB (and I have a lot of mixed feelings about them) came into this thing after it was already a dangerous and abusive cult.
The org has become a kind of monster, transcending the people who are part of it. Sometimes I wonder if that is a type of demon.

Public Stoning
by cameo-d inin reading witnessoo7 thread, i wondered this.. if two names are announced as df'd, even though the df might be for separate infractions, aren't people going to "assume" that the reason is because of some immoral association between the two people announced?.
if more than one name is announced as df'd at a meeting, is it not suspect that all names mentioned are in cahoots of "associated sin" ?.
has it ever happened in your hall where two names were announced as df'd and people assumed they had "sinned together" and it turned out to be df'd for 2 non-related "sins"?.

Mrs. Fiorini
HintofLime,
LOL! A classic JW experience! You quit going to the meetings and instantly fell into a life of debauchery and sin!
What would they do without these fantasies about ex-JW life? They might be tempted to quit themselves, that's what. IMO they are secretly jealous and resentful.
